As nowadays the utility of modern medicine has been commonly used,

however, Indonesian people still believe in Jamu and consumed it for generations. Jamu is a traditional Indonesian herbal made from natural ingredients such as  part of plants like roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves, fruits, honey, royal jelly, milk, free range chicken’s egg (Travel.cnn.com, 2015)(Wikipedia, 2015).

There are countless different recipes for individual medical issues and this recipes were handed by generations of village healers (EthicalFoods.com, 2014).

Moreover, You can find Jamu everywhere in Indonesia, however,  it is

Mbok Jamu (Mbok Jamu, 2015)

customary in Java (Wikipedia, 2015). Traditionally, “Mbok Jamu”, the young to middle aged  Javanese women worn traditional kebaya, carrying bottles of Jamu in bamboo basket on her back, selling  it from village to another villages and it still exist but The “Mbok Jamu” is using motor bike to sells Jamu (Wikipedia, 2015).

Additionally, there are also factory that produces Jamu in Indonesia such as Air Mancur, Sido Muncul, Nyonya Meneer, or Djamu Djago, which has been packaged in sachet (Wikipedia, 2015).

Below is a few ingredients in Jamu and their uses:

  • Turmeric = for detoxifying, to curb snoring, to ease menstrual cramping and reduce body odor.
  • Galangal = for seasickness and sore throat. Singers often drink concoctions with this root to keep their vocal cords performing at top notch.
  • Ginger = for detoxifying, morning sickness and to warm the body, improve circulation.
  • Lemongrass = for alertness, to stop gum bleeding and repel mosquitoes.
  • Tamarind = for constipation and to improve skin softness.
  • Sulfur = for rashes and itchy skin. Also used frequently in beauty products ( Travel.cnn.com, 2015)
